The Louisiana Hall of Master Folk Artists, begun in 1981, was created to honor the most influential folk artists in Louisiana.
When it was begun, Dr. Don Hatley, then director of the Louisiana Folklife Center, which houses the Hall of Master Folk Artists, explained its role:
In Louisiana, the people's art is folk art, and master folk artists present their work in a wide variety of forms... music, dance, crafts, storytelling, food and architecture. It is time for these master folk artists to be recognized and given the respect due them.
Members are chosen by a three member panel from the Board of Directors of the Louisiana Folklife Center. "Selection to the Hall is based on the folk artists' depth and quality and the longevity of their commitments to the folk arts," explained Hatley. "A folk artist receives his art through example and oral explanation from members of his or her family and community. The folk artist then passes that art along to future generations."
