Dr. Lisa AbneyDr. Lisa Abney holds a Ph.D. in English from the University of Houston (1997), an MA in English from Texas A&M University (1988), and a BA in Spanish from Texas A&M University (1986). Dr. Abney's interest in folklore began when she was young, long before she knew that folklife was a discipline -- she always found her older relatives' stories and material culture traditions intriguing. Her formal training in folklore came from her work with Dr. Carl Lindahl at University of Houston.
Dr. Abney's current folklife research interests lie in oral folk narrative, death and burial traditions of Louisiana, and in folk music. Additionally, Dr. Abney is a linguist, and she is currently working on a Linguistic Survey of North Louisiana. Along with Dr. Suzanne Disheroon-Green, she has edited two collections of essays about Louisiana writers, Songs of the New South: Writing Contemporary Louisiana and Songs of the Reconstructing South: Louisiana Writing From 1865-1945.
Dr. Abney has served as an advisor to the Local Legacies Program, a celebration of folklife in conjunction with the Library of Congress, American Folklife Center. She has served as a panelist with the Louisiana Division of Arts. She is the editor of the Louisiana Folklife Magazine, which is a publication of the Folklife Society of Louisiana. This year, Dr. Abney is the faculty advisor for the NSU chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the National English Honorary Society.
Dr. Abney is happy to have this opportunity to serve as Director of the Louisiana Folklife Center and wishes to extend a hearty welcome to all visitors to the Louisiana Folklife Center and NSU.
