Improve your communications skills and
investigate a possible career in mass communications. Debate the effects of
mass media on youth and culture. This fun and fast-paced course offered by a
nationally accredited journalism program will introduce young scholars to techniques
for effective media messages, both written and visual, and will introduce
them to the role and responsibilities of a free press in a democratic
society. Topics will include interviewing, news writing, editing, diversity,
and legal and ethical issues. In this course, a strong emphasis is placed on
writing skills as an important component of effective communication.
Students will study and practice in a fully equipped Mac lab and will
showcase their reporting and writing skills with news stories about the
ADVANCE Program published in the ADVANCE yearbook. For students
contemplating working on a high school newspaper or yearbook, this course is
a must. For any student, this course will benefit overall writing and
critical thinking skills. NOTE:
This course may be eligible for articulated college credit at Northwestern
