Fine & Graphic Arts Progam

The teaching of art is quicksilver. To touch the inspirational genius of a single individual at a single point in time is mastery in itself. To touch more than one is teaching excellence. At Northwestern we strive for excellence.
- Dr. Roger A. Chandler, Associate Professor of Art, Head of the Fine & Graphic Arts Program

The current post-Postmodern art world is described best by the maxim "anything goes." A teacher of art should define teaching with the maxim "everything known." In order to prepare today's student for success as emerging professionals, art historians, and teachers, instructors must understand as much as they can about a broad range of nascent topics as well as historically critical issues both debated and not. To prepare today's student to achieve success, we must be armed with more than the brush and the pen... we must be armed with the knowledge necessary to use them as means to important ends. As teachers, we pass on so much more to our students than technique. We pass on knowledge.
- Robert D. Moreau, Jr., Assistant Professor of Graphic Design and Figuration

The Study of Fine & Graphic Arts at Northwestern State University is based on the philosophy that students must go beyond skill development in the manipulation of art media, into programs that offer a full understanding of the times in which they live and framed within a context of history. The art program prepares students to meet the demands of the professional art world through academic study as well as hands-on training and portfolio production.

Fine & Graphic Arts is a program in the School of Creative and Performing Arts. Three degrees are offered, a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art, a Bachelor Fine Arts in Graphic Communication and a Master of Art in Art. The BFA degree in studio is available in multiple disciplines. The BFA degree in graphic communications is a more tightly structured program for those interested in the commercial art world. The MA is a 30-hour graduate program with various studio concentrations.

The art facility is among the best in the State. It features a Macintosh G4/G5 computer lab, photo darkroom and separate photo studio, a traditional printmaking lab as well as a sculpture lab complete with a built-in bronze casting foundry. Students work in ceramic, painting and design studios structured for optimal teacher/student interaction. Seniors may have semi-private studios and graduates have private studios.

The Fine & Graphic Arts programs are fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. The Mrs. H. D. Dear, Sr. and Alice Estelle Dear School of Creative and Performing Arts Center has been named an Area of Excellence by the Louisiana State Board of Regents.

Art scholarships are available based on the quality of a portfolio and academic standing. Graduate assistantships are available for graduate students.

As part of the graduation requirements students must present an exhibition as well as a professionally prepared portfolio suitable for employment interviews. The department maintains an extensive network of NSU art graduates working in the field across the country, providing contacts for students entering the job market or continued study in graduate programs. Upon graduation students will be prepared to step into the professional and/or academic world.

The faculty, which represents an excellent cross section of strengths in all disciplines, is committed to the best in academics and professionalism. Each is active in his or her field of studio production and/or research.
