Fine and Graphic Arts major requirements: (81 semester hours) Students seeking a major in Fine and Graphic Arts must complete 81 semester hours, within the 125 semester hour Fine and Graphic Arts curriculum, which include a 48 semester hour art core and a 33 hour concentration. Students must choose a concentration. A “C” or better average is required for all Art classes to complete requirements for graduation.

Fine and Graphic Arts Core Requirements: (48 hours) Art 1010, 1020, 1060, 1070, 1150, 1180, 1190, 1350, 2000, 2050, 2090, 2160, 2220, 2230, 3240 or 3540, and 4980.

Concentration: (Fine and Graphic Arts majors must select a 33 semester hour concentration as defined below.)


Graphic Communications

The emergence of desktop publishing ushered in a new era of design. Today, the Internet is once again redefining the role of artists and designers. NSU's program in Graphic Communications provides a solid foundation for students choosing a career in advertising design.

Courses build upon creative intuition by study in the areas of design, conceptualization, layout, typography, photography, illustration, commercial art and multimedia design. Traditional and computer aided techniques are combined with assignments that focus on real world application.

Graphic Communications Major Requirements (214A): (74 semester hours) Students seeking a major in Graphic Communication must complete 74 semester hours, within the 124 semester hour Graphic Communication curriculum, which include Art 1110, 1120, 1700, 2100, 2110, 2190, 2700, 3100, 3700, 4400, 4700.

Studio

NSU is dedicated to providing a strong liberal arts education for students pursuing a career in the visual arts. The Studio Art Program requires 125 hours of course work, including core curriculum of English, History, Math, Science, and include traditional media such as painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking and photography. Aesthetic control, creativity through thought and development of traditional media techniques are areas of focus in the Studio Art program.

A firm knowledge of art history is also stressed in order to assure that students have a sense of continuity regarding the evolution of art over time. A Senior Exhibition requires the student to individually present their best work for display in one of the galleries.

Studio Major Requirements (214B): (46 semester hours) Students seeking a major in Art must complete 46 semester hours, within the 123 semester hour Art curriculum, which include Art 2020, 2060, 2070, 2120, 2130, 3010, 3020, 3120, 3150, 3160, 3210, 3250, 3500, 4000, 4030, 4120, 4220, 4450, 4460.

Art Minor

Art minor requirements: (21 semester hours) Art 1010, 1020, 1060, 1070, 1150; and six semester hours of Fine and Graphic Arts electives.


Photography Minor

Photography minor requirements: (21 semester hours) Art 1010, 1150, 1190, 2190, 3190, and select six semester hours from 3290, 3390, and 4590.

Senior Exhibition: Graduating seniors will be required to demonstrate studio competence by presenting a public exhibition for faculty committee evaluation. Specific areas of deficiency will require additional study. All Fine and Graphic Arts students must take Art 4980 their senior year to satisfy senior exhibition requirements.
