After receiving his Bachelor degree from Northwestern State University in 1990, Dr. Mathews taught high school band for seven years in the public schools of Louisiana and Texas. His high school bands consistently earned superior ratings at local, state, and national contests. Dr. Mathews' received the Master of Music Education degree from the University of North Texas, where he served as a Teaching Fellow. Dr. Mathews is also the commander and conductor of the Texas Air National Guard Band, which travels the globe extensively giving concerts and performing at patriotic events. Dr. Mathews led this band on a tour of the Czech Republic during the summer of 1999. He has studied conducting with James Smith, Jerry Junkin, Gene Corporon, Virginia Allen, Frank Wickes, and H. Robert Reynolds. His professional memberships include Louisiana Music Educators Association, Texas Music Educators Association, Music Educators National Conference, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Pi Kappa Lambda, and the International Trombone Association. Dr. Mathews is a regular commercial trombonist and drummer, and has performed with such groups as the Four Tops, the Temptations, members of the band Toto, and with Aaron Neville of the Neville Brothers. He performs regularly in Louisiana, Texas, Alabama, Florida, Arkansas, and Mississippi with the Harmon Drew Super Group and Earshot Graffiti.
