Mr. Smith is in his twenty-eighth year of teaching at Northwestern. He has received degrees in music performance from the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville (Bachelor of Music) and the the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC (Master of Music). He has also done additional study in Music History/Literature at Catholic University, plus a course in Musical Criticism with Elliott Galkin, the former music critic of the Baltimore Sun. Mr. Smith performed with the US Navy Band as principal oboist and English hornist, among other positions, from 1970 to 1977. Mr. Smith serves as Coordinator of the Music Division, Department of Creative and Performing Arts. He teaches oboe and music history/literature, and teaches/coordinates NSU’s “Exploring the Arts” core course. Mr. Smith compiled Exploring the Arts, a textbook taken from various fine arts sources from publisher by Simon and Schuster. He is the recipient of numerous grants in support of Northwestern activities, as well as the Magale Distinguished Professorship Award (1994-95, 2000-1).
