“The Creole Chronicles” project, funded by a grant from the Lower Mississippi Delta Initiative through the National Park Service has evolved into an ongoing production. The initial project called for the development of a pilot program to create booklets of historical, narrative, and photographic accounts of the various Creole communities located within and with connections to the state of Louisiana. The original funding supported the development of a series of six booklets. The next round of funding was received in support of three additional booklets along with community workshops designed to promote the existence of available Creole cultural resource listings and their use. A thematic approach will be used in the development on the next three booklets.
Due to funding limitations and printing availability, there have been delays in the actual printing of these books. Hopefully, this problem will be corrected soon. We are also developing a means to produce portions of these publications online in the near future.
CREOLE CHRONICLES, VOL. 1 CANE RIVER COMMUNITY
This first volume of the Chronicles gives a pictorial as well as narrative overview of the Cane River Community of Louisiana. This booklet has laid the groundwork for the additional volumes currently in print.
Due to its high demand, funds were sought and received to support the second printing of this issue. This booklet is available for purchase at a cost $6 (includes S/H).
CREOLE CHRONICLES, VOL. II CREOLE CELEBRATIONS
Celebrations by the Creole communities are the focus of this second volume. Many of the events common to the majority of the Creole colonies are discussed and pictured. Some of the colonies mentioned are Pointe Coupee, Mallet, Cane River and Grand Marais Louisiana.
This volume is currently scheduled for re-printing and should be available for purchase soon.
CREOLE CHRONICLES, VOL. III, FRENCHTOWN COMMUNITY
Due to the migration of Creoles from many of the Louisiana areas, Creole colonies were naturally formed in other states. One of these communities came to be known as the “Frenchtown Community” of Houston, Texas. This chronicle deals with that migration and the how the community was formed.
This volume is currently scheduled for printing and should be available for distribution and purchase soon.
CREOLE CHRONICLES, VOL. IV, SLIDELL LOUISIANA
A relatively unknown community of Creoles, Slidell boasts of a multitude of Creole families and traditions. Contained in this volume is talk and pictorial accounts of the landscapes, the families, the spirit and the community.
UPDATE 2/21/03 - Both volumes, III & IV, are currently available and the first distribution copies are being mailed out to our Organization List (libraries, historical and genealogical societies, etc.) The remainder of these copies will be given out on a first come, first served basis.
