The legal assistant or paralegal program is a certificate program which consists of eight academic courses. It is not a degree program. Upon completion of 24 semester hours of LAP courses, a student with an overall "C" average is awarded an NSU Legal Assistant Certificate. In order to enroll for this program, a student must have a high school diploma; it is not necessary, however, to present ACT scores with application for admission to the university. The program is also offered for students who wish to take one course or more as an elective, or for the non-traditional student who desires to gain a basic knowledge of the law. Typically it takes 2 years to complete the program and receive the certificate. The School of Social Sciences offers 2 courses each fall and spring semester, but no classes for the LAP program are offered in the summer.
All Legal Assistant courses are taught by attorneys. A student may begin the program at any time and does not necessarily need to take courses in sequence. Courses consist of the following: Introduction to Law (LAP 3010); Legal Research (LAP 3020); Litigation (LAP 3030); Estates, Trusts, and Wills (LAP 3040); Corporations (LAP 3050); Real Estate and Mortgages (LAP 3060); Family Relations Law (LAP 3070); Law Office Administration (LAP 3080). Courses are offered at night to meet the needs of working students
