Master of Art in Adult Education, Online

Overview

The Adult Education graduate degree program provides a contemporary, technology-oriented preparation for educators in schools, post-secondary institutions, industry, and military settings. Using technology available, graduate students in Adult Education interact through the Internet as the program is offered completely online.

Certifications Available Through Degree

NSU offers certification as a GED teacher or Center Supervisor through the Master of Art with a concentration in Adult Education. Adult education teacher credential requires Louisiana teacher certification; GED Center Supervisor credential requires Curriculum Supervisor certification. You may take certification courses alone or as part of a degree program.

Students In Adult Education

Northwestern State University incorporates academic excellence, technological sophistication, and a student-centered environment into programs for both traditional and distant learners. Students work closely with teachers and advisors in person and through telecommunication at every stage of their programs.

Typical Positions Assumed By Adult Education Graduates:

Graduates find employment as GED teachers & administrators, trainers, staff developers, and managers of continuing & community education offices.

NSU’s Adult Education program has become one of the largest in the south in just nine years. The program comprises approximately 10% of Northwestern’s graduate enrollment.

Courses in Adult Education:

A sample of the Adult Education courses required for the degree is listed below. Students are required to complete 33 hours for the degree including courses not listed in the support, foundation, and research categories. You may take certification courses alone or as part of a degree program. Courses required for certification are marked with an asterisk (*); other certification courses may be chosen from several options.

Core Area

  • EDAE 5700: Foundations of Adult/Continuing Education.
  • EDAE5710 Development & Learning in Adulthood.
  • ETEC 5780 Technology Planning and Administration.
  • EDUC 5840 Research Based Decision-Making in Education.

Concentration Area (12 Semester Hours)

  • EDAE 4700 Fundamentals of Teaching Adult Education.
  • EDAE5730 Organization & Administration of Adult Education Classes.
  • EDAE5740 Adult Learning in Distance Education Settings.
  • EDAE 5750 Program Development Process in Adult/Continuing Education.

Support Area (3 to 6 Semester Hours):

  • Selected from adult education or educational technology.

Application Area (3 to 6 Semester Hours): Choose one.

  • EDUC 5950 Research Problems. or
  • EDUC 5980 Thesis (6 hours).

Adult Education Graduate Admission Requirements

Regular Admission to Graduate Study

  • Students applying for regular admission to the Graduate School must have or provide the following:
  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university (2.5 GPA or Higher)
  • Application on file prior to registration
  • Official Transcripts from each college or university attended
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Scores (800 or higher - verbal and quantitative composite score)

Provisional Admission for Undergraduate Students

Undergraduate students who are one semester from graduation can apply for provisional admission to graduate study. Students can register for up to six semester hours (four in the summer semester) of graduate credit. Requirements for provisional admission for an undergraduate student include:

  • Must be registered for graduation
  • 3.0 GPA
  • Lack no more than 9 semester hours (six in the summer semester) for the completion of the baccalaureate degree.

International Students

International students must meet all requirements for regular admission. Additional requirements include:

  • An evaluation of their educational credentials by a United States professional evaluating service
  • Minimum score of 550 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or a minimum score of 250 on the American Language Institute at Georgetown University English Proficiency Test (ALL/GU EPT)

Note: The Dean of Graduate Studies and Research may waive this requirement for a foreign student in instances where English is the native language.
