BellSouth Endowed Professorship in Telecommunications

Northwestern State University

Northwestern has become a leader in the innovative use of telecommunications technologies to provide educational opportunities for Louisiana students. The continued effective application of a broadening array of telecommunications options, however, will depend upon the guidance and insights of scholars who are keenly aware of the changing demographics of the population, the educational needs of the citizenry, the potential of telecommunications technology, and the innovative application of this technology. Northwestern has therefore, with funding from BellSouth, created the BellSouth Endowed Professorship in Telecommunications. The professorship will be a University level position engaged in research and instructional activities directly related to the exploration and facilitation of educational, telecommunications technologies and will run from July 1- June 30 of the award period (2 years).

 

Responsibilities of the Professorship

  1. Conduct research on effective educational applications of telecommunications technologies.
  2. Teach undergraduate and graduate courses modeling effective instructional uses of telecommunications technologies.
  3. Advise the University Planning Council on trends in the use of educational technology.
  4. Secure grant support for the training of faculty and students in the use of telecommunications technologies.
  5. Consult with local public schools on the educational uses of telecommunications technologies.
  6. Submit a final report detailing activities and evaluation of objectives

 

Advantages Afforded

    1. Hold the exclusive title of BellSouth Endowed Professorship in Telecommunications for two fiscal years
    2. A minimum teaching load of 9 – 12 hours after allowing for a single course release per semester
    3. A $3, 000 - $4,000 budget to be used in the commission of the responsibilities of the professorship. (The award amount will vary depending on the annual interest accrued.)

 

Minimum Qualifications of Applicants

  1. Hold a minimum rank of Assistant Professor at Northwestern State University
  2. A documented record of practical and scholarly involvement in the area of educational telecommunications
  3. Be professionally engaged in research, teaching, and/or facilities management concerning the effective educational application of telecommunications technologies.

 

Application Process

  • To be considered for the subsequent fiscal year an application must be submitted by April 22 of the year preceding the award year.
  • Applicants will be notified in writing of the selection committee’s decision by May 3rd.
