CLYDE BOSTICK ENDOWED PROFESSORSHIP

Each year a faculty member within the Department of Social Sciences is awarded the Clyde Bostick Endowed Professorship in Social Studies. Clyde Bostick, a paraplegic as a result of wounds received during World War II, received bachelors and masters degrees from NSU and masters in history from LSU. He worked for ten years for NSU in Watson Library and was a member of Phi Alpha Theta, an honorary and professional society for historians. Upon Clyde Bostick's death, his family endowed a professorship
in his name to recognize his lifetime interest in social studies.

The Clyde Bostick Professorship, a yearly award, provides funding for a faculty member to engage in research in one of the areas of social sciences. The amount of the award is usually about $4,000 and is available in July of each year. Expenditures must be completed no later than June 30 of the following year. The funds can be used on research
related activities such as materials and travel.

Proposal

The proposal should include a four-page, double-spaced, typed narrative. The narrative should provide a description of the research or activity to be undertaken and a statement of the value of the research or activity to the university and larger community.  The expected tangible outcomes of the project (e.g. report, article, professional paper presented, and/or enhanced teaching) should be clearly stated. In addition to the narrative
there should be a cover sheet with the name, title, and 300-word abstract of the project.  A list of expenses directly related to the project should be included on a separate sheet.  Proposals are due by April 15th of each year.

Eligibility

All full-time faculty members (tenured or tenure-track) of the Department of Social Sciences are eligible to submit a proposal. An individual receiving an award one year will not be eligible for an award the following year. Award recipients will be expected to participate in Research Day activities in the twelve-month period of the award.

Selection Process

One faculty member from each of the ranks of Assistant, Associate, and Professor will serve on the selection committee each year. The recipient from the current year will serve as one these three members the following year. The department head may serve on the committee if needed. The award announcement is made in May.
