Although not many people know that there is an Italian population in Louisiana, there are large Italian settlements in Independance and New Orleans, and smaller communities in the Delta and in both Northwestern and Southwestern Louisiana.
In some parts of the state, including New Orleans and Monroe, Sicilians maintain St. Joseph's Day traditions, including the creation of a large, food-covered altar. Across the state, Italian farmers have carved out a hard-won niche.
