Chitimacha Tribe of Louisiana

Native American
Chitimacha Tribe of Louisiana

by Hiram F. "Pete" Gregory

The Chitimacha tribe, a group indigenous to Louisiana, is primarily located in St. Mary Parish. They have the oldest recognition in the state, and maintain a tribal office, a museum, a casino, a fish processing plant, and a school on their reservation. The Federally recognized tribal people have continued to make their world-famous cane basketry, as well as wood carving, shell work, and pan-tribal arts and crafts.

They have not retained their language, although many know French. Their traditional medicines are preserved, and efforts are underway to revive older stories and other traditions.
