Taking the TOEFL

The purpose of the Test of English as a Foreign Language is to evaluate the English proficiency of people whose native language is not English. The test uses a multiple-choice format to measure the ability to understand North American English. The test consists of three sections:

• Listening Comprehension - Measures ability to understand English as it is spoken in North America.
• Structure and Written Expression - Measures ability to recognize language that is appropriate for standard written English.
• Reading Comprehension - Measures ability to understand nontechnical reading matter.

You must get a TOEFL bulletin for your country. The bulletins are usually available at the following places:

• United States educational commissions and foundations
• United States Information Service (USIS) offices
• Binational centers
• Private organization such as the Institute of International Education (IIE)
