Minutes of Meeting, 8/11/99
Let the record show that Deaunna Fleming, the Student Government President at the Shreveport campus was scheduled to attend but unable to due to an emergency.
Also attending the meeting were:
Dr. Anthony Scheffler, Director of the Computer Center
Dr. Dan Seymour, Vice President of Student Affairs
Mr. Carl Henry, Advisor to the SGA
Dr. Steve Horton, Head of the Journalism Department
Item one on the agenda was a presentation by Dr. Scheffler explaining the history of the technology fee. Also in his presentation was a proposed budget for the 1999-2000 academic year. The presentation outlined how the funds raised by the fee had been used in the past and how the proposed budget sought to continue that progress. A copy of the budget as well as the presentation may found attached to this page.
Item two was the approval of the budget. With the exception of one, all budget items were approved.
Exception: The committee will investigate the future of the Kyser Hall lab found on the second floor of the said building. The hardware in use in that lab was purchased under Title III funding and therefore subject to transfer.
The final item on the agenda was a proposal from Dr. Horton to fund the hardware and software for a Macintosh lab in 225 Kyser Hall. The lab is currently used by the journalism department and in need of upgrades. The journalism department will provide all furniture, student workers, and operating supplies. Dr. Horton also proposed that the lab would be open to all students.
The committee unanimously approved Dr. Hortons proposal. Despite past actions towards expenditures of this type, the committee approved the funding of the lab for the following reasons:
The technology fee does not currently fund a Macintosh lab and the need for such a lab is not so demanding that it warrants funding and implementation of a an independent lab.
Journalism will open the lab to all students and at least two stations will remain open even during class times.
Journalism is providing all of the furniture, student workers, and printing supplies for the lab. (This often represents a greater cost than the equipment used.)
It is known that any equipment purchased by the tech fee remains the property of the students and may be confiscated if any compromise in the intended use of the equipment is found in the future.
