Growing up we have often heard “A job worth doing is worth doing right.” Latisha McDaniel, senior journalism major, has proven this adage true by becoming the new media and public relations employee for the Natchitoches Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Originally hired as an intern, McDaniel only worked a month and was hired for the full-time position. She now combines working and her school schedule. She credits the NSU journalism program with preparing her for this career step.
“Everything we are learning we will use,” McDaniel said.
Her job includes a variety of hands-on tasks such as updating the Web site, promoting events and festivals with the Natchitoches Parish, designing posters and creating press releases. Each day is a little different with always something to do, she said.
Public relations can be intense with the demanding schedule. McDaniel recently worked 20 days in a row. With a young daughter and graduation on her mind, balancing home and school seems to be a challenge, but McDaniel accomplishes it with stride.
“It helps when you have great people to work with who are helpful,” she said.
Her supervisors are likewise complimentary. “She’s a hard worker, easy to work with and has adjusted very well, especially juggling family life,” office manager Denise O’Bannon said.
Her job has its challenges and its perks, McDaniel said. She especially likes to travel and meet people from all over. Originally from Natchitoches, McDaniel is gaining experience through the historic perspective and understands what brings people to this quaint Louisiana town.
McDaniel plans to graduate from NSU in fall semester 2008.
“It is such a blessing to have a job before you graduate,” she said.
