2003 LEH Teacher Institute for Advanced Study

“The Purchase and Beyond:  Louisiana’s Literature and Culture in the Secondary School Humanities Classroom”

The participants in the 2003 Teacher Institute for Advanced Study assembled from throughout Northern and Central Louisiana. The academic disciplines that they represented included English, Reading, Social Studies, and Fine Arts, and although most are currently teaching in secondary schools throughout the state, several elementary education professionals joined us as well. Teachers of gifted-talented students also participated in the Institute.

As part of their participation in the 2003 LEH Teacher Institute, participants created Unit Plans in which they put the writings of Louisiana authors “to work” in their classrooms. Their Unit Plans appear below in the hope that their work might be of use to others teaching throughout the state. Many of these Unit Plans are interdisciplinary, and each one is correlated to the Benchmarks and Content Standards approved by the Louisiana Department of Education.

Each Unit Plan is identified with the following information:

We hope that you will find the Unit Plans included here useful and we invite your comments on the Plans or on the site in general. For further information, please contact the Institute Director, Dr. Lisa Abney.
