Course Descriptions
1010-Introduction to Spanish. (3) Basic lexicon and structures with supplementary work in the Foreign Language Resource Center. Communicative approach.
1020-Elementary Spanish. (3) Continuation of 1010. Prerequisite: 1010.
2010-Intermediate Spanish I. (3) Complex structures with supplementary work in the Foreign Language Resource Center. Prerequisite: 1020.
2020-Intermediate Spanish II. (3) Continuation of 2010. Prerequisite: 2010.
2990-Directed Reading. (3) Guided readings and preparation of portfolio geared towards student's career. Prerequisite: 3060 or 3070, and 3080 or 3090. This is an independent study.
3060-Spanish Grammar and Composition I. (3) Development of oral and written skills through the in-depth study of the use of complex structures. Prerequisite: 2020, or 2010 if student is also enrolled in 2020.
3070-Spanish Grammar and Composition II. (3) Continuation of 3060. Prerequisite: 2020, or 2010 if student is also enrolled in 2020.
3080-Spanish Conversation. (3) Development of oral skills. Prerequisite: 2020, or 2010 if student is also enrolled in 2020.
3090- Advanced Spanish Conversation. (3) Continuation of 3080. Prerequisite: 2020, or 2010 if student is also enrolled in 2020.
3100-Survey of Spanish Literature from the Middle Ages Through the 17th Century. (3) Spanish Literature from its beginnings to the end of the 17th century. Prerequisite: 3060/3070, and 3080/3090.
3110-Survey of Spanish Literature from the 18th Century to Modern Times. (3) Spanish Literature from the 18th century to the present. Prerequisite: 3100.
4210-Spanish Culture and Civilization. (3) History of Spain and characteristic elements of its culture. Prerequisite: 3060/3070, and 3080/3090.
4220-Translation. (3) An analytic approach to the structures of Spanish and English; strategies and techniques for the translation of texts; emphasis on topics of special interest. Prerequisite: 3060/3070 or 3080/3090 or approval of instructor.
Students minoring in Spanish must complete a minimum of 21 credit hours in Spanish, including Spanish 3060 or 3070, and 3080 or 3090.
Students have the option of testing out of only the basic courses - 1010, 1020, 2010, and 2020.

Student Teaching Program
The program runs a Student Teaching Program whereby students teach Spanish at the Northwestern Elementary and Middle Lab Schools, the Child Development Center, Head Start, and North Natchitoches Elementary. This program, which was started in the Spring of 1999, is a step towards the addition of a Teacher Education Curriculum to the Spanish Program. This will ensure that the advanced-level students are certified as Spanish teachers by the time they graduate, in order to provide them with a career which is presently in very high demand.
Spanish Club
This is a weekly opportunity for both students and staff to gather together in a distended way to celebrate Spanish events and learn more about the Spanish language and culture. It is the ideal complement for the classes, because the students have the opportunity to interact with the Spanish-speaking community. The students taste real Spanish dishes and learn some recipes. They play games, have contests and picnics, learn various dances, celebrate festivities pertaining to the Hispanic world, do community work, raise funds to help students participating in NSU in Spain, and send donations to the needy. The Club also participates in University events such as Homecoming Parades and International Nights.
The activities are meaningful and memorable, and the students have a lot of fun. The meetings provide a wonderful setting for learning in a relaxed atmosphere and the curiosity and enthusiasm necessary for foreign language learning.
Club meetings are held from 3-4 pm on Wednesdays in Kyser room 341.
Foreign Language Resource Center
The Foreign Language Resource Center is located at 313 Kyser Hall. Its hours vary but generally it is open Monday through Friday. It is equipped with viewing and audio-lingual systems and computers, and has many resources for foreign language study: CD-roms, videotapes, audiotapes, electronic workbooks, lab manuals, video modules, practical guides to language learning, collections of television programs, music, newspapers, magazines, and books.
The functions of the center are the following:
1) Provide students with an acquisition-rich environment to facilitate their learning process and help them to gain an understanding of the target cultures.
2) Provide faculty with the necessary facilities to enable them to carry out their duties effectively, as well as the resources to carry out research and develop effective and beneficial instructional techniques needed to prepare students adequately for the challenges that face them.
3) Develop materials for the Spanish Teacher Education Program.
4) Serve the community by organizing audio-visual customized evening courses geared specifically towards fields such as law enforcement, nursing, and social services.
It also provides free tutoring for students.
