Faculty and Staff Meeting

February 23, 2005, 3pm

Dr. Monk opened the meeting.

Dr. Monk thanked the faculty for administering the survey and encouraged those who hadn’t administered it, to do so.

Reminders:

1.Equipment in the rooms such as TVs, VCRs, and etc: if anything is needed please go through the proper procedures.  Procedures include signing a log and letting Jeremy or Tommy know.  If an emergency arises, and something is borrowed, please put it back.  Keep in mind starting times of other classes and the fact that other instructors may have counted on the same equipment.  Also, please let the equipment cool off before moving it.  Quite a few bulbs have been broken lately.

2.Be patient about the cleaning, we only have one janitor at this time.

3.The library has equipment if you need to check it out, but it must be returned the same day.

Improving the Campus:

1.The university underwent an Institutional Review recently.  A copy is in the faculty lounge. It was a very positive outside review, however, some areas were less than positive: communication and lack of participation in budgetary matters.

2.The campus looks vacant on Fridays.  Don’t allow us to fall in the trap of avoiding Fridays; we need to pay attention to the demands of our student population.

3.Bossier Parish Community College is on NSU’s campus.  This college caters to freshman and remedial levels.  Once 12 (for credit) hours have been completed the students can transfer to NSU.  If the students do not take and pass 12 hours, then they are not considered transfer students.

4.Discussed TOPPS Program and working with the high school counselors.

5.Military and military spouses can sign SOCAD agreement.

6.We will hold a mini-Grad Fest on the Leesville Campus-we will have financial aid, pictures, Joston’s, and someone to sell caps and gowns.  Grad School and Recruiting have also been notified and may set up tables.

7. The bid has been awarded for the work on the sidewalks, parking lots, and landscaping.  The winning bid was significantly higher than anticipated so it is going back for reconsideration.

8. Dr. Monk handed out an updated Summer Schedule.  Last meeting he asked faculty to beef up B-Term.  He appreciated efforts, but was still a little disappointed with the number of classes listed.  However, compared to main campus B-Term offerings, we did well.  Keep in mind the people who are here for a limited amount of time.  Adding A and B Term classes can maximize their core courses in a minimum amount of time.

8. Dr. Monk gave his appreciation to Juanita Darby.  Juanita has helped cover for Martha while she is out on maternity leave.  This personnel loss did, however, highlight the fact that more non-traditional times have been allowed.  The non-traditional times took the space of other classes.  Please watch scheduling all classes at the same hours and overlapping with other core courses.

9. Update on Travis Eaglin.  Many unknowns such as surgery date, if the tumor is cancerous, and when the test results will be.

Meeting closed.
