FACULTY AND STAFF MEETING – JANUARY 19, 2005

Dr. Monk opened the meeting.

1. Dr. Monk thanked those for helping with registration.

2. Welcome to new staff member, Jeremy Newman, Police Officer 1.  Appreciation to Tommy Tilley for serving as interim security officer.

3. Counts for the Leesville Campus were 917 for Fall, and 750 as of Jan 19, 2005.  Traditionally enrollment goes down from Fall to Spring.  NSU overall had a record enrollment of 10505, and has had a record enrollment for five years in a row.  The count is now at 9655, which came as surprise.  Possibility of funds being cut:  the governor asked schools to cut budgets for next year and take a certain percentage of cut for this year.  We have an appeal in.  One thing that can help ensure we get funding is to beef up B-Term.

4. Encouraged to do departmental scheduling.  For example, in Education, the classes would be reviewed to insure the classes do not conflict with each other.  Instances happen for nursing students frequently.  Nursing students all have to take the same thing, so this is an area of concern.

5. B-Term requests are out.  Martha needs these as quickly as possible due to pending maternity leave.  Fall and Summer schedules will be out on Monday.  There is a problem with overlapping class times.  There is room for Saturday classes and Friday classes if you are interested in teaching one of those days.  Sunday is also available.  Keep in mind we have a tradition of providing classes for the non-traditional student.

6. Instructors are reminded to take a look at their classroom needs and if they discover they need AV equipment, please bring it to Martha and Tommy’s attention as quickly as possible to avoid scheduling conflicts.

7. Using the same tests over and over may lead to their be compromised.  There is a potential for tests to be sold.  For example, students having camera phones, can take a picture before the instructor is aware. Another example is a student entering a DLL classroom and taking a test for a class he is not enrolled in.  The safest thing is to change your tests.

8. Quiz Bowl is February 15, 2005 at Leesville High School.  Attendance and participation are urged.

9. Scope of Work for the landscape project:  Mandatory pre-bid walk-through on Jan 26th.  Sealed bids due in early Feb.  Work entails fixing drainage problems such as the sidewalks, parking lots and flowerboxes.  The abandoned well will also be removed and the sunken part of the parking lot will be fixed.  Covered sidewalks are not included, it was in the discussion, but it was too expensive.

10. Students can only print 700 pages a semester instead of 1200.  Instructors should consider this when asking students to print.  It is possible to do assignments digitally.

11. Don’t take aggression out on the computer and copier.

12. A new survey will be administered during the semester.  Handed out in draft form for instructor feedback.

13. Talked about having a fire drill, had a fire drill, but it was interfered with.  Maintenance told students to ignore it.  Next drill, treat it as such, unless Dr. Monk says differently.

14. Veteran’s cemetery update, was on hold, money is now approved for the cemetary.  Construction should happen soon.

15. Hilda Brown’s conference.  Recommends the international conference in Hawaii.  Gives information of a workshop EMOBING, it is the next up and coming program based on emotional abuse.

16. Nursing curriculum has changed.  LPN articulation agreement is now four semesters instead of five.  No longer need anatomy labs, biology has changed to 1100, speech and fine arts have been added to curriculum.

17. NSU Leesville is going to host the Lion’s Club for lunch in two weeks.  This is important for NSU so we can try and obtain other funding.

18. Dr. Monk would like to have a meeting with students, please send feedback via email when will be a good time.

19. SACS as most know is a set of standards; which can be inspected every 10 years.  Another component is QEP. Dr. Monk is over this new concept.
