LIBERAL ARTS COUNCIL MINUTES February 16, 2005 The Liberal Arts Council met Wednesday, February 16, 2005 at 2:30 p.m. Present: Dr. Steve Horton, Dr. Marietta LeBreton, Ms. Claudia Triche, Dr. Cynthia Lindsey, Dr. Rocky Colavito, Mr. Bill Brent and Dr. Donald Hatley, Chair. Dr. Hatley called the meeting to order. The minutes of the January 19, 2005 LA Council meeting were read. Vote in favor of the minutes as read was unanimous. Dr. Hatley reported that three out of the top four academic departments in the University in the overall Retention Plan report were in the College of Liberal Arts. These include CAPA, Journalism, and Social Work. Recruiting under selective admission was explained by Dr. Mary Edith Stacy, Director of Enrollment Services. Suggestions for departmental participation in recruiting were junior/senior days, alumni recruiting receptions, campus visits, and participation by speaking at local/extended high schools when requests are received. Dr. Stacy stated that if the retention strategy being used is not working, try something different. Also, she stressed that customer service is very important. Dr. Stacy explained the role of BPCC on NSU campus. Students must have 12 hours of non-developmental and developmental hours satisfied to transfer from BPCC to NSU. NSU professors will not be teaching for BPCC. Adjuncts may/will be affected but not faculty. BPCC will be on campus for one year. The department’s only obligation is scheduling the time of the class. The deadline for the department handbook has been moved to April 15, 2005. Dr. Hatley discussed the classroom civility statement. When asked if we need to establish a statement, Dr. Colavito said this statement would work with revision. Ms. Triche said Social Work had a Code of Ethics, and she was asked to bring a copy to the next meeting. Status report on all promotion/tenure/retention for faculty was discussed. All faculty should have a “continuing” departmental evaluation folder which contains items defined in faculty handbook. Dr. Horton gave an update on SACS. Syllabi for new courses that have never been offered must be loaded electronically. Faculty Activity Reports are loaded electronically and Dr. Horton explained how to do them. The deadline on the Faculty Activity Report is February 4, 2005. Dr. Horton offered to help if anyone needs him in preparing assessment plans. Assessment plans are due June 15th. Dr. Horton reminded everyone of the LA Awards Banquet on April 26 at 6:30 p.m. in the Student Ball room. He asked that everyone get their list to him by March 10. There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned. The next LAC meeting will be March 16, 2005 at 2:30 p.m., in the Journalism Conference room.
