FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NATCHITOCHES- Dr. Lisa Abney, director of the Louisiana Folklife Center and an associate professor of English at Northwestern State University, will receive a special humanities award from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities during a ceremony Tuesday, April 27 at the Governor's Mansion in Baton Rouge.
The annual Humanities Award Ceremony and reception is sponsored by the LEH. The event honors Louisianians who have made contributions to the study and understanding of the humanities.
"I am honored and humbled to receive this award," said Abney, who has been director of the Louisiana Folklife Center since 1999. "The opportunity to work in the humanities has been rewarding for me. I have met a number of wonderful people and enjoy helping others understand and appreciate the various cultures of Louisiana."
Abney earned a bachelor's in modern languages and a master's in English from Texas A&M and a doctorate in English at the University of Houston.
She joined Northwestern's faculty in 1997. Abney has co-edited three books with colleague Suzanne Disheroon-Green, "Dictionary of Literary Biography: 21st Century American Novelists," "Songs of the New South: Writing Contemporary Louisiana," and "Songs of the Reconstructing South: Building Literary Louisiana, 1865-1945." She and Green were invited to participate in the first Louisiana Book Festival in 2002.
Abney has also published articles and projects in a variety of publications and has been an active presenter at professional conferences.
