FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NATCHITOCHES-The 13th annual session on the ADVANCE Program for Young Scholars will be held on the campus of Northwestern State University June 9 29. The ADVANCE Program is a summer residential program for academically gifted students entering grades 8-12. The program is one of five collaborative efforts with the Duke University Talent Identification Program (TIP).
Participants must meet a minimum ACT or SAT score to qualify for ADVANCE. Alternate admission status may be met. Admission into the program is on a first come-first serve basis. During the three-week program, students enroll in one intensive fast-paced course that normally covers an entire year's worth of high school material or a semester of college level material. Classes will be held six hours per day, and there will be a one-hour study hall Monday through Friday. Additionally, students will have class for three hours on Saturday morning.
"The ADVANCE Program for Young Scholars offers a challenging and rewarding curriculum designed to broaden the horizons of the best students in the state and region," said Dr. David Wood, director of the ADVANCE Program for Young Scholars at Northwestern. "We combine the need to improve academically with the desire to spend summer break in the traditional way---having fun."
Classes normally have 10 15 students and are structured to allow students to progress at their own maximum pace. Many of the faculty hold terminal or advanced degrees from universities such as Emory, the University of Virginia, the University of Florida, Louisiana State University, the University of Southern Mississippi, Purdue, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Duke University and Oklahoma State University. Teaching assistants who are studying at leading colleges and universities around the country help the faculty.
The residential life portion of ADVANCE is an equally important aspect of the program, offering balanced leisure and cultural activities to complement the intensive academic curriculum. The residential staff organizes a wide array of extracurricular activities to suit almost any taste.
Applications are now being accepted for qualified students.
