FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NATCHITOCHES - Northwestern State University will sponsor the 19th session of the ADVANCE Program for Young Scholars June 3 June 23. The ADVANCE Program is the only summer residential program for academically gifted youth in Louisiana that is affiliated with Duke University's Talent Identification Program (TIP).

"The ADVANCE Program for Young Scholars offers a challenging and rewarding curriculum designed to broaden the horizons of the best students in the state and region," said Dr. David Wood, director of ADVANCE. "We combine the need to improve academically with the desire to spend summer break in the traditional way---having fun."

During the three-week program, students enroll in one intensive fast-paced course that normally covers an entire year's worth of high school material or a semester of college level material. Courses include mathematics (algebra I, geometry, algebra II, pre-calculus), natural sciences (biology, chemistry, and physics), computer courses (digital design & animation), and the humanities (age of empire, classical mythology, creative writing, film studies, journalism, revolution in Latin America, and Shakespeare & performance).

Minimum ACT or SAT scores must be met for admittance or the student may enter through the Alternate Admission Policy. Admission into the program is on a first come-first serve basis.

The residential life portion of ADVANCE is an equally important aspect of the program, offering balanced leisure and cultural activities to complement the intensive academic curriculum. The residential staff organizes a wide array of extracurricular activities to suit almost any taste. "Our students work hard, play hard, and go home happy. Then they come back,"
said Dr. Wood.

Applications are now being accepted for qualified rising 8th 12th grade students. For further information call (318) 357-4500, e-mail palmerh@nsula.edu, or visit, www.advanceprogram.org.
