FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NATCHITOCHES-Northwestern State University will sponsor the 15th session of the ADVANCE Program for Young Scholars June 8 June 28. The ADVANCE Program is a summer residential program for academically gifted youth and is one of five collaborative efforts with the Duke University Talent Identification Program (TIP).

Minimum ACT or SAT scores must be met for the various courses, which include the humanities, mathematics, the natural sciences and computer science. Alternate admission status may be met, and admission into the program is on a first come-first serve basis.

"The ADVANCE Program for Young Scholars offers a challenging and rewarding curriculum designed to broaden the horizons of the best students in the state and region," said Dr. David Wood, director of Gifted and Talented Programs and ADVANCE. "We combine the need to improve academically with the desire to spend summer break in the traditional way---having fun."

During the three-week program, students enroll in one intensive fast-paced course that normally covers an entire year's worth of high school material or a semester of college level material. Classes will be held six hours per day, and there will be a one-hour study hall, Monday through Friday. Additionally, students will have class for three hours on Saturday morning.

Classes will typically consist of 10 15 students and are structured to allow students to progress at their own maximum pace. The instructors are a talented and diverse group and many of the faculty hold their terminal or advanced degrees from such distinguished universities as Emory, the University of California, Berkley, the University of Florida, Louisiana State University, Purdue, Duke University, Northwestern State University and Oklahoma State University. Teaching assistants who are studying at leading colleges and universities around the country help the faculty.

The residential life portion of ADVANCE is an equally important aspect of the program, offering balanced leisure and cultural activities to complement the intensive academic curriculum. The residential staff organizes a wide array of extracurricular activities to suit almost any taste.

Applications are now being accepted for qualified students. For further information call (318) 357-4500, e-mail palmerh@nsula.edu, or visit our web site, www.advanceprogram.org.
