NATCHITOCHES - Dr. Andrew W. Bacdayan has been named the Noble B. Morrison Professor of Business at Northwestern State University.
Bacdayan has been a member of NSU's faculty since 1973. He was named associate professor of economics in 1982 and a professor of economics in 1994. Bacdayan received his Doctorate in Economics from Utah State University. His other degrees are from Michigan State University and the University of the Philippines.
His teaching responsibilities include undergraduate courses in the principles of economics, intermediate price theory, business and public policy, international trade, quantitative methods, public finance and managerial economics. He also conducts research, advises students and participates in curriculum planning and development.
In 1991, Bacdayan received the Mildred Hart Bailey Award for Outstanding Research for his work on the economics of the learning process. The Bailey Award is one of the highest honors Northwestern bestows on its faculty. He is also the recipient of the Southwestern Society of Economists' Irwin Distinguished Paper Award in 1991 and 1996.
Bacdayan's research has been published in the Southwestern Economic Review, The International Journal of Business Disciplines, the National Finance Journal and the Economics of Education Review. He is a refereed journal reviewer, a forensic economics consultant and a member of the American Economic Association and the Southwestern Society of Economists.
Bacdayan plans to use funding provided by the endowed professorship to provide his classes with drafts from an economics principles text he is writing. He also plans to fund travel and supplies needed to conduct his research on the economics of the learning process, the economics of insurance and the economic development of indigenous societies.
As the Morrison Professor, Bacdayan also plans to provide assistance to other faculty members as they work to publish scholarly papers.
Bacdayan has also been a faculty member at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. He was also a visiting assistant professor of resource economics and an assistant professor in the College of Forestry at the University of the Philippines, College, Laguna, Philippines. Bacdayan was also an assistant research economist at Utah State.
