FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NATCHITOCHES - Two Northwestern State University faculty Dr. Mark Schaub and Dr. J. Mark Thompson have been selected as the recipients of the 2006 Mildred Hart Bailey Research Award. The award was presented at NSU's annual Research Day.

The Bailey Award is given annually to a Northwestern faculty member or members for outstanding research and/or distinguished artistic performance or creative work substantially completed during the past three years. Criteria for the award include: scholarly or creative significance; national, regional or local impact; originality and ingenuity of project design and critical recognition by experts in the field.

Schaub, an associate professor of finance, has authored or co-authored 35 refereed journal articles in his five years as a Northwestern faculty member. He has also published 13 papers and made 13 presentations at professional conferences. During his time at Northwestern, student scores on exit exams in finance have increased.

"I am very honored to receive this award," said Schaub. "A big motivation to do the amount of research I have is that there was a need for faculty in the College of Business to produce research to maintain accreditation. Outside evaluators said we were weak in the area of faculty research, so I tried to help correct that weakness. I was able to work with 10 other colleagues to produce publications."

Schaub has a strong interest in researching personal and consumer finance.

"Those areas are a practical and useful area of research," said Schaub. "I have also enjoyed researching international investments. In my work, I have found, not surprisingly, that international investments perform well when the U.S. market performs poorly and vice versa. Investing internationally provides a great diversification benefit."

Thompson, a professor of trombone, low brass and brass methods is in his sixth year on NSU's faculty.

"I get to do something I love that is very rewarding," said Thompson. "To receive recognition from others for doing it gives me a deep level of satisfaction. It takes a great deal of effort to stay current by attending conferences, authoring publications and books and performing concerts."

A charter life member of the International Trombone Association, Thompson has been very active in literature-related activities since 1989, including service as Chair of the Publications and Literature Committee. Editor and co-author of French Music for Low Brass Instruments.

He is also editor and co-author of the second edition of Solos for the Student Trombonist published in 2004. His writings have also appeared in the International Trombone Association Journal. Thompson was a featured artist/clinician at the 1997 International Trombone Festival, and he performed at the 1995 International Brassfest. He was a featured soloist with the South Arkansas Symphony in 2005. Earlier this year, he was a featured soloist with the Shreveport Symphony and the U.S. Army Orchestra.

"I have been privileged to perform with regional symphonies and make solo performances," said Thompson. "It's rare for someone who plays bass trombone to have those opportunities. I am in a state of disbelief about how many opportunities I have had recently."
