NATCHITOCHES-The Dr. Jimmy Bankston Endowed Scholarship has been established in the NSU Foundation at Northwestern State University.
The scholarship was set up in memory of Bankston, a leading
central Louisiana orthodontist and businessman, who died Oct.
11 at 64 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Bankston had an orthodontic practice in Alexandria since 1965,
assisting two generations of patients. He was active in the community
as a member of First United Methodist Church of Alexandria and
the Rotary Club of Downtown Alexandria. Bankston was well respected
in his profession, holding membership in the American Dental Association,
the Louisiana Dental Association and the Southwestern Orthodontic
Society. He was also one of the owners of Grant Manor Nursing
Home in Colfax and the Regency House in Alexandria.
A 1957 graduate of Dry Prong High School, Bankston was class salutatorian. He earned degrees from Northwestern and the Loyola School of Dentistry.
The scholarship will be awarded to a graduate of Grant High School that will be a freshman pre-dentistry or education major at Northwestern. The student must maintain a 2.5 grade point average or have a learning disability.
