FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NATCHITOCHES – More than 1,100 high school students from around Louisiana are expected to take part in the Louisiana Boys State and Louisiana Girls State program in July on the Northwestern State University campus. Girls State will be held on July 1-7 and Boys State is set for July 2-8.
The delegates are high school students who will be seniors in the 2007-08 school year. This is the first time Northwestern has hosted the event. Boys State and Girls State had been held at LSU in Baton Rouge for more than 60 years.
While at NSU, Boys/Girls State citizens will stay in university residence halls and will use the Friedman Student Union, Russell Hall, Morrison Hall, James A. Noe Military Science Building, Kyser Hall the A.A. Fredericks Center for Creative and Performing Arts, The Family and Consumer Sciences Building, Turpin Stadium, Prather Coliseum and the Wellness, Recreation and Activity Center.
During Boys State and Girls State, the delegates become part of an operation of a city, parish or state government. Mock governments are formed and the delegates work as mayors, city officials, sheriffs, clerks of court, school boards or legislators. They can also run for statewide posts including governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state or attorney general.
Delegates are sponsored by an American Legion Post, local business or community based organization.
In addition to Northwestern, the City of Natchitoches and Natchitoches Chamber of Commerce have also been involved in planning for Boys State and Girls State. Both groups are planning to have the delegates as special guests at the city’s Fourth of July celebration.
