NATCHITOCHES -Carolyn Brackett, senior program associate of the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Heritage Tourism Program, will present a lecture at Northwestern State University Monday, Oct. 23, at 6 p.m. in Room 142 of Kyser Hall. Admission is free and open to the public.
Her lecture is titled, "Heritage Tourism: Saving Our Past and Sharing It with Visitors." Studies show that heritage travelers stay longer and spend more money than other kinds of travelers. A good heritage tourism program also improves the quality of life for residents and Brackett will explain how this is accomplished.
The lecture is part of the MAHR (Master of Art in Heritage Resources) Fall Public Lecture Series.
Brackett provides heritage tourism consulting services to clients
across the country. Recent projects include guiding the development
of a heritage tourism plans for Natchitoches as well as southeast
Tennessee, Harrisburg, Pa., Duluth, Minn., Southern Appalachia
Partners, and Panama City, Fla. Other recent activities include
conducting heritage tourism workshops in Kentucky, Georgia, Oklahoma,
Illinois, Ohio, Maine, West Virginia, Mississippi and New Hampshire,
and assessment and assistance in developing heritage tourism programs
in Macon, Ga., St. Paul, Minn., St. Augustine, Fla., and Miami.
From 1997-2001, Brackett served as director of Marketing
for The Hermitage, Home of President Andrew Jackson, in Nashville,
Tenn., where she developed the site's first marketing plan. During
her tenure at The Hermitage, Brackett was a founding member of
the Nashville Attractions Coalition, a collaborative marketing
organization representing Nashville's attractions.
Brackett's involvement in the tourism industry began in 1988
when she joined the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development
as assistant director of information.
