FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NATCHITOCHES - Dr. Michael B. Brezinsky, who teaches philosophy at Tulane University and Loyola University in New Orleans, will give a lecture on the existentialist philosopher Martin Heidegger Friday, March 16 at Northwestern State University. The lecture will be at 2:00 p.m. in Room 204 of Morrison Hall and is sponsored by the Louisiana Scholars' College at NSU. Admission is free and open to the public.
The presentation, "Heidegger and the Meaning of Existence," will "explore the implications of Heidegger's thinking about who we, as human beings, are," said Brezinsky.
Brezinsky received a doctorate in philosophy from Tulane.
His doctoral dissertation was titled "A Poetics of Care:
Heidegger and the Paradox of Authenticity." Brezinsky teaches
courses at Tulane and Loyola on the history of philosophy, philosophy
and literature and the meaning of selfhood.
Last year, Brezinsky was honored by the Tulane University Mortar
Board with their Award for Outstanding Teaching.
Brezinsky' s presentation at NSU is in conjunction with Dr. Fraser
Snowden's course on existentialism.
"Heidegger, who died in 1976, is widely considered one of the most important thinkers of the 20th century," said Snowden. "It is exciting to have this young Heidegger scholar come to Northwestern to share his insights about this complex and controversial figure."
A question and answer session will follow the formal presentation.
