FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NATCHITOCHES-Students who want to get a "head start" on their college careers are encouraged to participate in Northwestern State University's third annual Summer Bridge, a program that assists college freshmen in making the transition from high school to college. The program is hosted by the University College at Northwestern and will be held from June 9 until July 18.
Students who participate in Summer Bridge are can get a head start on their college career and become acquainted with NSU programs and services. Summer Bridge students participate in recreational activities, academic workshops, study laboratories and cultural enrichment.
They also have the opportunity to enroll in up to eight hours of college courses. Students may select two courses offered by the University during the second and third summer sessions. Academic advisors in University College will assist students in selecting courses for the summer sessions.
Summer Bridge students who are not from the Natchitoches area must secure housing and sign up for a campus meal plan through the Office of Residential Life. Charges for campus housing and meal plans will be included in the student's fees for the summer term. Students should contact the Office of Residential Life at (318) 357-6703 for more information regarding campus housing and meal plans.
Summer Bridge students may use financial aid to pay University fees. Students should be aware that some financial aid awards such as scholarships may not be used until the fall semester. Contact the Office of Financial Aid at (318) 357-5961 for more information.
According to academic coordinators for University College, David Deggs and Tracy Bison, there are several benefits for students who participate in Summer Bridge.
"The students gain the upper edge and confidence when attending college in the fall," said Bison. "We pride ourselves in giving them the personal attention they need to be successful college students."
"They build connections with other students, faculty and staff through participation in learning communities," said Deggs. "Also, the students gain access to university services such as academic advising, tutoring and learning labs."
