FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NATCHITOCHES -Northwestern State University's 2005-2006 budget will be cut by just over $1 million as part of state budget reductions brought on by Hurricane Katrina. Northwestern will cut its budget by $1,063,425 through a series of cost saving measures, according to President Dr. Randall J. Webb.

The university will balance its budget through reductions in travel, supplies, wages of labor, professional and extra services contracts and other areas of the operating budget and freezing vacant positions. Webb said the reductions will be done without layoffs or furloughs of full-time faculty and staff.

"Gov. Kathleen Blanco, legislative leaders, Commissioner of Higher Education Dr. Joseph Savoie, University of Louisiana System President Dr. Sally Clausen and others have worked tirelessly to minimize the negative impact of the state's fiscal problems on higher education, and their efforts have apparently been successful," said Webb.

Webb cautioned that the state's financial status could change quickly and dramatically, and that would affect NSU's fiscal status.
