FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NATCHITOCHES-A group of future leaders at Northwestern State University may be developed before the students leave high school.

NSU's Office of Student Activities and Organizations has developed a new program, CAMP (Creating Attitude to Maximize Potential) to bring a leadership development program to several area high schools. CAMP was developed by Director of Student Activities and Organizations Carl P. Henry III, and Assistant Directors of Student Activities and Organizations Terria Alexander and Luke Dowden.

Five Northwestern students, Ryan Brinkman of Abbeville, Lacey Fletcher of Rosepine, Marc Johnson of New Orleans, Kristy Lane of Metairie and Mandy Owens of Lafayette, will serve as facilitators for a series of in-school programs over the next two months.

"We want the high school students to see the type of students we have at Northwestern and the opportunities that are available to them here," said Henry. "There are a variety or organizations and opportunities here that allow students to develop leadership skills which will serve them throughout their lives."

Officials at each participating school will choose between 10 and 50 students to take part in CAMP which will last about two hours.

"The five students who are taking part have really bought into this," said Alexander. "There are a lot of hands on components which the high school students will like. We hope they learn concepts of teamwork, how to work in an organization which will prepare them for leadership positions in their school and at NSU."

Dowden said an "eclectic group" of NSU students were chosen reflecting a variety of backgrounds.

"We wanted a different group of students who could help develop this program," said Dowden. "They will be able to relate personal development skills to these high school students. Those who take part will have more success in the classroom and will be able to do a better job of considering about their career and where they are headed."
