FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NATCHITOCHES-A new identification system for Northwestern State University student and faculty records will be implemented this semester, according to Registrar Lillie Frazier Bell.

The university will begin using campus wide ID numbers to replace Social Security numbers used for assigning grades, class schedules, financial aid and other information.

Beginning in mid-February, students may obtain their campus wide ID number by accessing the NSU home page (www.nsula.edu) and clicking on the "Campus Wide ID" link. Students will be required to enter their Social Security and birth date to obtain their campus wide ID number. Students may also obtain their campus wide ID number by visiting the Registrar's office and presenting a picture ID.

"This move is partially in response to student requests," said Bell. "Over the years, we have had very few problems associated with using social security numbers. The change to a campus wide ID should allow us to better protect student records which is our primary obligation."

Bell said the campus wide ID will be used strictly for unofficial university records. Other records such as official transcripts, enrollment certification and degree verification will still require using social security numbers.

According to Bell, Northwestern students should receive a letter in a few weeks notifying them of the changes.
