NATCHITOCHES-Classes on French, family pictures, medical coding, bonsai and cellular and PCS phones are among those being offered in October by Northwestern State University's Office of Continuing Education.

The class on travel French begins Tuesday, Oct. 1 and runs on Thursdays from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. through Oct. 29. Christine Ferrell is the instructor. There is a fee of $50 for the class.

The class is designed to give the basics of communication in French to those planning a trip to a French-speaking country or who want to learn more about Louisiana's French heritage.

"Taking Better Family Pictures" will be taught by Dr. Ron McBride on Monday evenings from 6 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. from Oct. 7 ­ 28 in Room 218 of Russell Hall. A Saturday morning class will be held on Oct. 19. In the class, participants will learn how to improve picture taking skills, particularly for family portraits and vacation photographs. Those taking the class will need a 35mm camera, three to five rolls of film and availability for processing between classes.

An entry level medical coding will be taught on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. at Winnfield Senior High School. There is a fee of $500 for the class plus $100 for a book. Dawn Lashley is the instructor.

The course is designed to prepare the student to enter the medical coding field at any entry-level position such as working in the front office of a clinic, physician's office or ambulatory care facility. Further study is recommended for those wishing to enter directly into a position with coding as a primary duty.

The introduction to bonsai is a hands on course for those with little or no experience in working with plants. Each student will receive a plant along with instructions for designing their own bonsai.

Bill R. Chandler Jr. is the instructor. The class will be held in Room 109 of the A.A. Fredericks Center for Creative and Performing Arts on Tuesdays from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. starting Oct. 10 and concluding Oct. 24 There is a $35 fee for the class plus a $35 material fee.

A class on cellular and PCS phones will taught on Wednesdays from 6:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. in Room 106 of Williamson Hall beginning Oct. 23. Dr. Rafiqul Islam is the instructor. There is a fee of $199 for the class.

The class is designed to give basic information on cellular and PCS phones and will provide background information and compare various technologies. Those who can benefit from the class include: those seeking a new career path, individuals who want to compare cellular and PCS phones, those who want to explore the national and international marketing aspects and the associated risks of this technology along with engineers, technologists and technicians interested in the design, testing and construction of cellular/PCS systems.
