NATCHITOCHES - NATCHITOCHES- A team of four Northwestern State University chemistry students have been awarded $1,000 to attend the National American Chemical Society meeting in New Orleans in April. The title of the winning entry was “Chemical Guilty of Swimsuit Murder – Victim Left in Pieces.”
Students Rebecca Sullivan of Many, Melissa Wilkerson of Shreveport, and Lauren Nunez and Matthew Morgan of St. Bernard participated under the guidance of their faculty advisor, Dr. Gillian Rudd, associate professor of chemistry.
The ACS Committee on Community Activities and the Office of Community Activities judged entries which highlighted creative and innovative hands-on activities for elementary school children, centering on the 2008 theme, “Having a Ball with Chemistry.” NSU was one of four universities to make the finals. The winner and finalists will be recognized at the Student Affiliates Awards Ceremony in New Orleans on April 8 as part of the ACS spring national meeting. In addition, the winning and each of the finalist chapters are encouraged to present posters of their “Chemvention” as part of the Sci-Mix program on Monday, April 9 in the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.
In addition, Rudd received a $500 travel award from COACH to participate in the COACH advanced workshop at the meeting. The workshop is entitled “Uses of Influence, Power and Conflict Resolution in Negotiation.” COACH is a group of senior women faculty in the chemical sciences from across the U.S. with a common concern about the gender based obstacles women scientists face in trying to attain their career goals. This is the third COACH scholarship Rudd has earned.
