NATCHITOCHES - Twenty-four students recently completed the Child Care Development Project - Course II at Northwestern State University's Cenla campus in Alexandria. The project is part of a comprehensive, statewide plan to improve the quality of early childhood care and education for children from birth through age eight. The project is funded by the Louisiana Department of Social Services utilizing money from a federal block grant.
According to program coordinator and Northwestern faculty member Rosemary Robertson-Smith, NSU was awarded the grant in the fall of 1995. Extensions to the grant have been awarded through this year. The project primarily serves employed persons in Central Louisiana in Class A licensed child care centers, Head Start programs, family child care homes and those who have plans to open a child care facility. The purpose of the courses is to enhance the competence and self-confidence of child caregivers/teachers in early childhood environments.
Course II graduates are graduates of last year's Course I and have accumulated 120 hours of child development associate credit.
The graduates included: Wanda Bolton, Paula Celestine, Beverly Collins, Shelly Domingue, Johnell Harrell, Margaret Harrell, Ora Henry, Janet Jackson, Karan Lemoine, Prince Mensah, Carolyn Thompson, Anita Williams and Twanda Woodruff, all of Alexandria. Also graduating were Lisa Adams of DeRidder, Faith Ashley of Cheneyville, Janet Williams of Glenmora, Carol Anderson of Lecompte, Joyce Coleman of Natchitoches, Heather Corley and Brenda Cutts of Pineville, Dawn Miller of Woodworth, Melanie Richmond of Pitkin, Margaret Coleman of Urania and Linda Guidry of Ville Platte.
NSU Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Thomas Burns was the keynote speaker at the recognition ceremony.
