NATCHITOCHES- Begona Perez-Mira of Natchitoches and Megan Sharkey of Ball were the top ranking graduates at Northwestern State University's spring commencement exercises held Friday, May 9 in Prather Coliseum. Perez-Mira and Sharkey each had a grade point average of 4.0.

Northwestern awarded degrees to 674 graduates at the ceremonies. During the 2002-2003 academic year, 1,473 students received degrees from NSU, the largest number for any academic year in school history.

Eleven other students also graduated summa cum laude with grade point averages of 3.9 or better. Those graduates were: Charissa R. Simon of Alexandria, Farrah Michae Lasyone of Atlanta, Erin B. Bardin of DeRidder, Jason Stewart Edwards of Doyline, Aimee Elizabeth Primeaux of Kaplan, Rebecca Hill Penfield of Many, Matthew Jared Bailey and Becky Owens of Natchitoches, Brandi L. Chatelain of Pollock, Nathan Paul Freeman of Thibodaux and Alexander C. Billioux of Easley, S.C.

The commencement speaker was Nathan Burl Cain, warden of the Louisiana State Penitentiary.

Northwestern awarded posthumous bachelor's degrees to Glen Denning DeVanie and Thomas Glen Baker.

Members of the graduating class of 1953 were honored with a "Second Diploma" marking the 50th anniversary of their graduation.

Faculty marshals were Dr. Andrei Ludu, the 2003 recipient of the Mildred Hart Bailey Research Award and Dr. Scott Roach.
