NATCHITOCHES-Seven non-credit classes will be offered by Northwestern State University's Office of Continuing Education beginning in February.
A class on notary public certification and the art of bonsai will begin Feb. 3. On Feb. 4, a course on medical terminology and country dance start. A scuba class will get under way on Feb. 5 followed by a Feb. 6 Cajun dance class. On Feb. 20, a travel French course starts.
The notary class will be on Mondays from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. in Room 218 of Russell Hall. C. Rodney Harrington is the instructor. The class is for those wishing to be a notary public in Natchitoches, Sabine or Red River parishes. There is a fee of $80 plus an optional $50 material fee for the class.
Bonsai is the art of designing trees in miniature form. The introduction to bonsai is a hands on course for those with little or no experience in working with plants. Each student will receive a plant along with instructions for designing their own bonsai.
Bill R. Chandler Jr. is the instructor. The class will be held in Room 109 of the A.A. Fredericks Center for Creative and Performing Arts on Feb. 3, 10 and 17 from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. There is a $35 fee for the class plus a $35 material fee.
A course on medical terminology begins Feb. 4 and runs until Feb. 27. The class will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. at a site to be announced. In the course, students will be prepared to recognize and understand basic medical terminology by teaching them key word parts associated with body systems, disorders, conditions and procedures. The course will also include methods to decipher difficult medical terms by breaking them down into basic components.
Dawn Lashley is the instructor. There is a fee of $200 plus $44.95 for the book.
"Boot Scootin' Country Dance" is for beginning dancers with an emphasis on basic rhythm and steps. The class includes the two-step, three-step and line dances. The class will be held on Tuesdays from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. starting Feb. 4 and concluding March 11. Class site is the East Concourse of Prather Coliseum. Sandy Tamplin is the instructor. The fee is $50 per person.
The basic skin and scuba diving course will give students an understanding of safe skin and scuba diving as well as proper use of equipment. Registration is on Feb. 12 with classes on Wednesdays from Feb. 12 March 19 in Room 106 of Williamson Hall. Brian Wimberly is the instructor. The fee for the class is $90 plus $135 for rental equipment and $50 for books plus a charge for certification.
The Cajun dance class will be held on Thursday evenings from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. from Feb. 6 until March 13 in the East Concourse of Prather Coliseum. Billy and Bobbye Keys are the instructors. There is a fee of $75 per couple.
This class is oriented toward those who have never done Cajun dancing. Dances such as the Cajun two-step, waltz and jig. After six weeks, participants should be able to do the waltz and jig at the intermediate to advanced level. The class is limited to those 18 years or older and couples only. As a follow-up to the course, field trips to Lafayette/Eunice area are offered.
Travel French is a fun course for those planning a trip to a French-speaking country or who are interested in Louisiana's French heritage. The class will be held on Thursdays from Feb. 20 until March 13 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Students will learn the basics of communications such as asking for directions and ordering in a restaurant. Those taking the class will also gain additional understanding of culture and traditions. Christine Ferrell is the instructor. There is a fee of $50 for the course.
