FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NATCHITOCHES-The NSU Chamber Orchestra will perform in concert Thursday, March 20 at 7:30 p.m. in Magale Recital Hall. Admission is free and open to the public. The program will also be performed Friday, March 21 at 7 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Colfax in a program sponsored by the Grant Arts Council. Charles Demuynck is the conductor.
"This will be the first time in several years this type of program has been performed at NSU," said Demuynck, who worked to create a chamber orchestra at Northwestern. "The chamber orchestra is a new artistic endeavor that is more intimate. It will be a wonderful opportunity to explore a whole other repertoire that has not been heard much."
The program will include Bach's "Cantata No. 51," Arvo's "Fratres paert," Mozart's "Symphony No. 33" and three pieces by Grieg. The work by Bach will feature two music faculty members, Galindo Rodriguez on trumpet and soprano Terrie Sanders.
The orchestra will consist of string players along with six wind players on the Mozart symphony.
"This Mozart symphony is one of the best symphonies he wrote in the earlier part of his life," said Demuynck. "It is full of charm and grace."
Demuynck said the works by Grieg were "rustic, charming and accessible." According to Demuynck, "Fratres paert" is a modern work that is minimalist. It has a section that evokes a group of monks in procession and is "peaceful."
The entire Natchitoches Northwestern Symphony Orchestra and the NSU choirs will perform Mendelssohn's "Elijah" April 10.
