NATCHITOCHES - Dr. Neal Corwell will be appearing in concert at Northwestern State University Saturday, Feb. 17 at 7:30 p.m. in Magale Recital Hall. Admission is free and open to the public. Corwell will also present a masterclass at 1 p.m. in Magale Recital Hall.
Corwell is a freelance composer and euphonium soloist/clinician with a doctorate from the University of Maryland in euphonium performance and pedagogy. He is also a member of Symphonia, a professional tuba-euphonium ensemble chosen from our nation's finest low brass performers.
For nine years, he was a member of the U.S. Army Band (Pershing's
Own) as one of the organization's featured soloists. Corwell was
an adjunct faculty member at Frostburg State University and Shepherd
College for seven years, teaching low brass and electronic music.
He has appeared in Europe, Asia, and across the United
States as a guest euphonium artist.
Corwell will be performing several original compositions.
The program will include Corwell's "Odyssey (parts 2 &
3)," "2 AM," "Scherzo" from "Sinfonietta,"
"Heart of a Wolf" "Quiet Mountain," "Aboriginal
Voices" and "Venetian Carnival Animals." NSU faculty
member J. Mark Thompson will accompany Corwell on "Quiet
Mountain."
Some of Corwell's compositions have been included on recent CD recordings released by Mark Records, Crystal Records, RJR Digital, TRYFAN, HRS, and Nicolai Music. He composed and performed all the music for his first solo euphonium/trombone CD, "Distant Images," in 1994 and recently released a new euphonium/tuba recording, "Heart of a Wolf" which also features original compositions. On the most recent CD, Velvet Brown is the tuba soloist and Corwell performs on euphonium, guitar and various electronic instruments.
