FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NATCHITOCHES The Criminal Justice Program at Northwestern State University is accepting applications for the Glen DeVanie Memorial Scholarships. The deadline for application is 4 p.m. April 1.

Requirements are that each applicant must be a criminal justice major with junior or senior status. Students must maintain an overall 2.5 grade point average and a 3.0 grade point average in the major.

The scholarships recipients will receive $250 at the beginning of the fall semester and $250 at the beginning of the spring semester. A student can be awarded the scholarship only one time. The scholarships will be awarded at the College of Liberal Arts Honors Banquet April 26.

Students interested in applying for the scholarship can download the application from the Criminal Justice Program website, http://www.nsula.edu/criminaljustice/Scholarship.html and return it with all supporting materials to Northwestern State University, Criminal Justice Program, Attn: Coordinator, Glen DeVanie Scholarship Application Process, Kyser Hall, Room 343B, Natchitoches, LA 71497. The department's phone number is (318) 357-6967, and FAX is (318) 357-6966.

DeVanie, a deputy city marshal in Alexandria, died in 2003 just months before he would have received a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Northwestern. He was killed in an auto accident while on the way to assist a fellow police officer. A posthumous bachelor's degree was awarded at spring commencement exercises in May 2003.

"Glen DeVanie was an individual who always placed others before himself. He was a humble man with no enemies who was always looking for the positive way of carrying out a task," said Dr. Shirley Snyder, assistant professor of criminal justice at NSU. "The criminal justice program is proud to present this scholarship in memory of Glen."

Anyone who would like to contribute to the Glen DeVanie Memorial Scholarship can download a contribution form from www.nsula.edu/docs/GlenDeVaniecontributionform.pdf.
