            NATCHITOCHES - Northwestern State University’s Mrs. H.D. Dear Sr. and Alice E. Dear School of Creative and Performing Arts, is opening its spring semester with an exhibition featuring the works of Roy V. deVille.  “And There Is Light” is a collection of recent works in on paper and canvas by deVille, an NSU alumnus and a member of the LSU-Alexandria faculty since 1970.  A reception honoring the artist will be held Thursday, Jan. 17 from 6-8 p.m. at Hanchey Gallery.  The public is invited to attend. deVille’s work will remain on exhibition through Feb. 1.  The gallery is open from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.

           deVille holds a Master of Arts degree from NSU where he studied with Orville J. Hanchey.  Post graduate teachers have included Warren McKenzie, Howard Yana Shapiro, Alfred Leslie, and Robert Colescott.  deVille was the recipient of the Huie Dellmon Trust Endowed Professorship for the 2003-2004 academic year.

           As a working artist, deVille was won numerous juried competitions and has exhibited throughout Louisiana and the Southeast.  He has a particular interest in Italian Medieval and renaissance painting and has engaged in research at the American academy of Rome as well as the National Academy of Art, Rome, where he participated in the Pompeii Restoration Project.

           deVille works primarily as a landscape artist.  His study of nature and the landscape has taken on many trips to Europe throughout the United States.  He has always been a strong advocate of working en plein aire at the site of his painting. His subjects range from the riverscapes of Europe to the rural and coastal regions of Louisiana.

           In addition to his teaching responsibilities, deVille is the university gallery director.  In this capacity, he is responsible for curating all shows at LSU-Alexandria.  deVille holds Curator status with the American Association of Museums and is a voting member of the International Council of Museums.  He has been cited by the Conservadora de la Fundacion Lazaro Galdiano for his curatorial work with the Heart of Spain exhibit, held at the Alexandria Museum of Art.

           deVille is active with state arts events and activities such as the Governor’s Committee for the Arts, an adjudicator for the state Gifted and Talented Program in art, and participates as a juror for local and state galleries and shows.  He is known throughout the state for his work in religious art restoration.
