NATCHITOCHES-Northwestern State University's Office of Electronic and Continuing Education will begin its schedule of fall classes Tuesday, Sept. 2 Classes in kenpo karate, water aerobics, Cajun dance, medical terminology, computer repair and more will be taught in September.

Kenpo karate will be taught beginning Tuesday, Sept. 2. The course will be taught until Dec. 4 on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. in Room 127 of the Health and Human Performance Building.

Kenpo karate teaches how to maneuver so that the opponent is unwittingly placed in a vulnerable position. It employs kicks, punches, blocks, judo, throws, locks, takedowns and more. According to instructor Bruce Adams, kenpo karate can help develop coordination, discipline and self-confidence.

Each age group will be divided into advanced and beginners. The fee for the course is $65 for children and $75 for adults.

A course covering the basics of medical terminology will be presented beginning Tuesday, Sept. 2. The class will be offered on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. through Sept. 23. The fee for the class is $200 plus $44.95 for the textbook. The site for the class will be announced.

In the course, students will be prepared to recognize and understand basic medical terminology by teaching them key word parts associated with body systems, disorders, conditions and procedures. The course will also include methods to decipher difficult medical terms by breaking them down into basic components. Yolanda Hardy is the instructor.

A class on water aerobics will begin Monday, Sept. 8. The class will meet Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. at the Nesom Natatorium until Dec. 5. The fee for the class is $75. Lori Eilts is the instructor.

The workout will consist of simple low-impact exercises done in the water. The program is designed to promote and maintain cardio-respiratory fitness, strengthen muscles and improve flexibility. Arthritic and/or pregnant women can greatly benefit from this class.

A notary public certification course will begin Monday, Sept. 8. The notary class will be on Mondays from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. in Room 218 of Russell Hall. C. Rodney Harrington is the instructor. The class is for those wishing to be a notary public in Natchitoches, Sabine or Red River parishes. There is a fee of $80 plus an optional $50 material fee for the class.

The Cajun dance class will be held on Monday evenings from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. from Sept. 8 until Oct. 13 in the East Concourse of Prather Coliseum. Billy and Bobbye Keys are the instructors. There is a fee of $75 per couple.

In the class, participants can experience the fun and excitement of Cajun music as they learn the Cajun two-step, waltz and jig. The class is oriented toward those who have never Cajun danced and after six weeks, participants should be able to do the waltz and jig at the intermediate to advanced level. The class is limited to those 18 years or older and couples only. As a follow-up to the course, field trips to Lafayette/Eunice area are offered.

Basic Training Pilates will also be offered in September. Pilates is a dynamic system of exercise created for the attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body. Pilates is a no impact workout that leaves the individual refreshed and invigorated. The workout was originally designed to help injured soldiers retain muscle strength and recover quickly. Later it was used by injured professional dancers.

Session I will be Sept. 8 through Nov. 7. The class will be from 8:15 until 9:15 a.m. in Room 127 of the Health and Human Performance Building. Rebecca Morgan is the instructor. There is a fee of $80 for the class.
