NATCHITOCHES- The flute trio of Tomas Janosik, Dominika Haramiova-Janosikova and Dennette Derby-McDermott will perform in concert at Northwestern State University Friday, Feb. 27 at 7:30 p.m. in Magale Recital Hall and Monday, March 1 at St. James Episcopal Church in Alexandria. Admission is free and open to the public.

Janosik and Haramiova-Janosikova are from Slovakia. McDermott is a faculty member at Northwestern State University.

The concerts are sponsored by the Mrs. H.D. Dear Sr. and Alice Estelle Dear School of Creative and Performing Arts at Northwestern.

The program will include works by Haydn, Corrette, Kuhlau, Casterede, Poulenc Doppler and Tcherepnin.

McDermott has worked with Janosik for eight years. They last performed together at the first Slovak Flute Festival in 2003 which McDermott and Janosik organized.

"This is a continuation of the collaboration we have had," said McDermott. "It is gratifying that both of them think enough to come here and play. Our students should benefit from hearing them play and learning about another culture."

According to McDermott, putting together a program of flute trios was challenging.

"A program of flute trios is not done often," she said. "It was difficult to track down recordings, but hopefully this can lead to more projects."

Janosik attended the State Conservatory in Bratislava and received an award as the best graduate for the year 1990. During 1990-91, he participated in an exchange through the French Ministry of Culture, studying in Paris at Conservatiore du Musique - Marcel Dupre. After the exchange, he attended the Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts in Bratislava. Janosik is completing a doctorate degree in flute performance and pedagogy also at the Academy in Bratislava where he is a teaching assistant in flute.

In 1990, Janosik won the Slovak National Flute Competition in 1990. From 1988 until 1992 he was principal flutist with the Slovak Radio Symphony. Since 1991, Janosik has been a member of the Slovak Philharmonic and currently is principal flute He has recorded with the orchestra works by such composers as Mozart, Berlioz, Brahms, Dvorak, Tchaikovsky, Mahler, Ravel, Debussy, and Shostakovich for EMI, Nippon Columbia, Pony Canyon, Naxos and Marco Polo. The Slovak Philharmonic has toured Japan, United States and throughout Europe.

Haramiova-Janosikova graduated from the Conservatory in Bratislava and continued her studies at the Music Academy. For the past four years, she has been first flutist in the Slovak Radio Symphonic Orchestra.

She was a participant in the Festival Talentinum Zlin in the Czech Republic. Haramiova-Janosikova worked with the Vienna Mozart Philharmonie during its tour of China and the Austrian-Armenian Orchestra during is tour of Iran. She was also worked with Pressburger Philharmoniker, Solistes Europeens and has been a soloist at performances in the U.S.
