NATCHITOCHES-Memorial services for former Northwestern State Dean of Students Dudley Gilbert Fulton, Sr. will be held Friday, Aug. 22 at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Natchitoches with Rev. James Poole officiating.
Fulton, 88, died Sunday. He donated his body to medical research.
Fulton was dean of students at Northwestern for 23 years and was instrumental in beginning the master's program in student personnel services. He was co-founder of the Blue Key National Honor Fraternity at NSU.
A native of Baker, Fulton grew up in Campti. He was a 1935 graduate of Louisiana State Normal College (now Northwestern), Fulton earned a master's degree at Louisiana State University. Fulton went to work at Northwestern in 1948 as associate director of student personnel and also served as director of student personnel.
He was listed in Who's Who in American College and University Administrators. After retiring as dean of men, he taught psychology at NSU for three years. In addition, he was principal at Natchitoches Academy. Fulton was a retired lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy with service in World War II.
The university honored him by establishing the Dean Fulton Award. The award, which is not given every year, is presented to a student, staff or faculty member at Northwestern whose meaningful contributions to Northwestern are in the high traditions of selflessness and service established by Fulton.
In 2000, Fulton was inducted into the NSU Hall of Distinction, the Long Purple Line.
He was preceded in death by his parents, the Rev. Jessie Ben Fulton and Dora Barr Fulton; brothers J.B. Fulton and Clyde B. Fulton; sisters Alma Kellum and Ina Holstead; first wife Ruby Chandler Fulton and second wife Mary Legendre Cloutier Fulton. Survivors include a brother, Fred C. Fulton of West Monroe; a sister, Daisy Bergeron of Shreveport; two children, Dudley (Dee) Gilbert Fulton, Jr. of Minden and Susan Fulton Odabas of Turkey; and six step-children, C. Edgar Cloutier III of New Orleans, Elise Cloutier of Annapolis, Md., Lynn Cloutier Dixon of Black Rock, Ark., Lou Cloutier Whitehead of Hattiesburg, Miss., and Amy Cloutier Hough and William Pierre (Bill) Cloutier of Natchitoches, 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Ramada Inn Coffee Club.
Donations can be made in his memory to the Dean Dudley G. Fulton Scholarship Fund at Northwestern State University.
