FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NATCHITOCHES- Northwestern State University student Alexander Billioux of Greenville, S.C is a recipient of the prestigious Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship.

Billioux is the only student at any university in Louisiana to be named a Goldwater Scholar. He is a student in the Louisiana Scholars' College, majoring in liberal arts.

"I am proud to be named a Scholar because it is nationally competitive," Billioux said. "Also, it is a major award in the scientific field. It puts me on an even playing field with students from major universities."

The Goldwater Scholars were selected on the basis of academic merit from a field of 1,155 mathematics, science and engineering students who were nominated by the faculties of college and universities nationwide.

The Goldwater Foundation is a federally endowed agency that was established in 1986. The Scholarship Program honoring Sen. Barry M. Goldwater was designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering. The Goldwater Scholarship is the premier undergraduate award of its type in these fields.

The Foundation, in its 14-year history, has awarded 3,632 scholarships with approximately $36 million. The trustees plan to award about three hundred scholarships for the 2003-2004 academic year.
