FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NATCHITOCHES – Dr. Greg Granger, Director of the School of Social Sciences and Associate Professor of Political Science at Northwestern State University, has had two papers published recently in national journals.
Granger contributed the "Introduction to Central Asia” to the newly released “Political Handbook of Asia 2007” by CQ Press, a division of Congressional Quarterly Inc. In the paper, he discusses the major historical and contemporary political issues across the geo-politically significant Eurasian landmass. These issues include the region's slow post-Soviet political development as compared with eastern Europe and the efforts to tackle challenges such as terrorism, drug trafficking, militant Islam and the competition among the United States, Russia and China for influence in the region.
The peer-reviewed online journal American Diplomacy has published Granger's article, "Russian Reactions to U.S. Foreign Policy: An Emerging Security Dilemma." In this article, Granger analyzes U.S.-Russian relations in regard to three issues: NATO enlargement, U.S. and NATO military policy in Central Asia and U.S. plans to deploy missile defense systems in Poland and the Czech Republic. Granger argues that the stakes are high in U.S.-Russian relations and should be treated as such. He concludes that without significant diplomatic effort to prevent an escalation of tensions over these three issues, a new nuclear standoff could be in the works, without any guarantee that the peaceful end of the Cold War will be replicated.
